Döners
The Döners series is deeply influenced by processed meat. In Mediterranean cultures, meat has long been skewered on spits or rods, appearing in forms such as brochettes, döner kebab, gyros, and shawarma. The aesthetic dimension of the work is as important to me as its materiality: I am interested in the tension between purity and impurity, and in how animal bodies are altered, transformed, and adulterated to become commodities. This contrast between purity and impurity highlights notions of value embodied in both the materiality and the aesthetics of the work, with commodity fetishism emerging as a key element.
