Traces

Traces, my most recent series of paintings, originates from the project The Shadow and is structured around memory and the ways in which we, as humans, inhabit and use nature. The project began in 2024 at Frieze Sculpture (London), where I first painted The Shadow: an intervention conceived to neither harm nor leave a lasting trace on the environment. In these site-specific installations, I paint the shadow of a tree directly onto the grass using an ecological, biodegradable paint that gradually disappears over time.

In the Traces paintings, these shadows are presented on blank canvases, giving rise to a form of dematerialization of the image that extends the search for a work without trace and fully sustainable. The purity of the canvas creates a play of dichotomies that also emerges in my Lonchas paintings series, where the purity of the white coexists with waste materials, such as plastics, acrylics, aluminium, foams or glass that spread across the surface.

The silhouette of the shadow does not represent a specific place; rather, it becomes an ambiguous image that may evoke a delta, a capillary network, or an aerial view, inviting reflection on how we use the land and its natural resources.
